Kays and Jays returns with a bang

By Steve AndersenARCADIA, Calif. - Kays and Jays used aslow pace to her advantage in Sunday's $67,338 Cascapedia Stakes, theclosing day feature of the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Kays and Jays ($5.40) set a pace of 23.03 and46.03 seconds in the seven-furlong race, and held off a late run from atroubled Irish Gypsy to win by three-quarters of a length. Kays andJays ran seven furlongs in 1:22.52.

The Cascapedia was makingher first start since finishing second in the Grade 3 Azalea Stakes atCalder in July. After that race, Kays and Jays was bothered by footproblems.

Trainer Mike Mitchell said Sunday's win could lead toa start in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes here in late December at thewinter-spring meeting.

"Why not give her a break now?" he said.

The Cascapedia was Kays and Jays's second stakes win, preceded by theRichland Stakes at Lone Star Park in April. The Cascapedia was herfirst win on a synthetic track, which did not concern Mitchell as muchas the layoff of nearly four months.

"I didn't think the synthetic track would bother her, but I was worried about the seven-eighths," Mitchell said.

Irish Gypsy was unlucky to lose. She was in traffic on the turn andclosed well to just miss. Irish Gypsy finished 2 1/2 lengths in frontof third-place Saucey Evening in the field of eight.

Kays andJays has won 4 of 9 starts and $147,370 for Zayat Stables, which boughther for $120,000 at the 2008 Barretts March sale of 2-year-olds intraining.
